Sisters and friends...

I have always been very competitive and sort of a workaholic. My parents used to tell me in high school that I studied too hard. :) Can you believe that there are Asian parents in America who would tell their child that? Maybe just mine... They used to call me at college to ask me if I was spending too much time on schoolwork, and my friends could not believe it. I compete not to beat other people, but to drive myself because I am a perfectionist at heart. It is funny how that has spilled over to Maya Road. When C and I started MR, it was because of a trip we took to a local scrapbooking store in Dallas. We saw products there that were really expensive, and given our experience, we knew we could do our own great designs for less. We sat down with our husbands that night and decided to launch a company focused on value and innovative ideas. Thus, Maya Road was born. Caroline and I started our first business at 10 and 12 or so. And we have been doing our own little ventures since. We started out in craft shows, moved on to some consignment shops and the like. Then we were Powersellers on eBay for awhile. I think we were always bitten by the entrepreneurial bug, so we are so happy to be part of this industry. I am amazed at how far we have come. People sometimes ask what it is like to work with your sister. I am not sure how to explain this, but we complement each other well. And we are totally (sometimes too much so) honest with each other. If she hates something I designed, you can be sure I will hear all about it. And vice versa. Since we have started MR, we are closer than ever, though we do spend most of our time talking about business. C lives across the country, so we chat online all day for hours off and on, sometimes up to 5 or 6 hours a day as we work. I am about 16 months younger than C, but I caught up with her in height and weight by the time I was about 3 and she was 4. It was a lucky thing for me, because otherwise I would have gotten lots of hand-me-downs! As it was, we grew up looking like twins (As the little sis, think I liked that better than she did!) We got married 1 week apart (happy 6 year anniversary to C and D!) and had our babies 6 weeks apart. It has been such a crazy and amazing adventure. Even though C and I do not see eye-to-eye about everything, we keep each other sharp. And I would not want to do this with anyone else...
